The doctor is in
September 19, 2009
The connection doctor that is.
I did some software updates today which usually is not a big deal except I decided to also update the imap server as well. Last time i tried to do this was when Debian Lenny first released and it killed my imap server so I reverted the package and put a hold on it.
I decided that it was high time I stopped running from my problems and see if either the package was fixed or if it was some configuration problem on my end.
- I removed the hold on my courier-imap and its supporting packages
- Updated my source list
- Sent an e-mail to the spenced.com support mailing list letting everyone know things may catch on fire…
- Took a deep breath and apt-get dist-upgrade’d
7500kb/s and 3 minutes later the update was complete
Database server was fine, web server was fine, webmin was working right, went to Squirrel mail and it was like Fuck you! Connection dropped. Well not exactly but that’s what it felt like.
I tail -f’d my mail.log and it showed my login connection then nothing…Great, big help there asshole logs!
Sent myself a test mail, did a qmail-stat, smtp and Pop3 were fine, just imap was being shitty. WTF I thought to myself. I get home and pop open mail.app and it fails to connect too so I pop open window -> Connection doctor and turn on details and I find…
* BYE [ALERT] Fatal error: Account’s mailbox directory is not owned by the correct uid or id:
uh..ok To the google!
I stumble across this mailing list convo and one of last e-mail explains they added a sanity check without really telling anyone that just tells your mail client a big Fuck you! if the id doesn’t match. Well of course the damn UID’s don’t match I’m using vpopmail everything has the same frakin user and group!
Atleast now I had a work around,
IMAP_MAILBOX_SANITY_CHECK=0 and everything was back t normal. Thank you connection doctor for giving me more detail than the servers own bloody logs!
